Day one notes

After a good first night’s sleep, we got up and moving around 7 a.m. We started the day with bagels, muffins and donuts from the unimpressive hotel breakfast.

Following breakfast, we walked about two miles to pier 78 and took the hop on-hop off tour boat at 10 a.m. to the south end of the island, close to the World Trade Center and 9/11 memorial.

The views from the observation deck were impressive on a mostly clear morning. Unfortunately, the bright sun made photography difficult when looking toward the east.

It was good to see the 9/11 memorial on the plaza. Thinking back to that day remains chilling 17 years later. The line to get into the 9/11 museum was very long, so we decided to leave that for another time.

Other sights included Brookfield Place, a shopping center and office-building complex located across West Street from the World Trade Center, and Oculus Plaza, the World Trade Center’s transportation hub.

We skipped lunch and did a lot of walking. With temps in the mid-30s, it was a little cool, especially on the return boat trip that got us back to pier 78 after dark. After a bit more walking, we found Tick Tock Diner and had dinner. There was nothing special about our food, but it was good and reasonably priced, especially for the convenient location. I would have no problem going there again. The menu offers a lot of options and I wouldn’t mind trying a few more.

Linda’s phone and my phone died on the return boat trip so we did not get to take some photos we would have.

We got back to the hotel about 7:45 pretty tired and sore. We walked at least 10 miles. Hoping a good night’s sleep will be all it takes to recover for tomorrow.
