After eating bagels and donuts from the hotel continental breakfast, we walked to the bus stop near the Flatiron Building to catch the tour bus to Battery Park, where we could switch to the Brooklyn Tour and get pizza for lunch at Juliana’s.
When we did not see a bus for a while, we walked to another stop. We waited a few minutes there before deciding to walk the rest of the way, which was just a couple miles.
Along the way we walked through China Town.
Juliana’s was worth the walk. We ordered two small pizzas and shared them. We also ordered root beers, except for Ina, who ordered a soda similar to Sprite. If we go back some day, we need to try the egg cream. The sodas were flavored with sugar, not high fructose corn syrup.
We caught the Brooklyn Tour bus after lunch. The tour guide, a native of Brooklyn, was entertaining while telling us why Brooklyn was better than Manhattan. He also told us how Juliana’s pizza was started by the former owner of Grimaldi’s Pizza, which is right next door.
Here’s a snippet from a 2012 story in ny.eat.com:
Patsy Grimaldi Opens Juliana’s After Lengthy Pizza War
Patsy Grimaldi officially makes his triumphant return to the Dumbo pizza scene today with the opening of Juliana’s. The founder of the famous Grimaldi’s on Old Fulton Street, he’s been out of the business since selling his shop to current Grimaldi’s owner Frank Ciolli back in 1998. Ciolli moved the pizzeria next door after a dispute with his landlord, at which point Grimaldi decided to reopen in that original Grimaldi’s space. This led to an awesomely old-school pizza war as Ciolli tried (again and again) to block Grimaldi’s return. But Grimaldi is back, naming the restaurant after his mother since Ciolli owns the Grimaldi name and since Patsy’s is also taken.
The Brooklyn Tour ended at Battery Park. We walked around the park
some before catching the uptown tou bus. We thought we could take it back to the Flatiron stop, but it only went to Times Square. We walked from there to the hotel to rest up before heading back to Times Square and Rockefeller Plaza after dark.
The after-dark sites were impressive and we took lots of photos.
After coming down from Top-of-The-Rock we bought food from a Halal food cart, which was fantastic. Linda, Brian and I got lamb pitas and Ina got falafel and rice.
We enjoyed the night time lights and other sights along Broadway as we walked back to the hotel.
